Default Bomber Command suitable map - Lincolnshire to Europe

I know I cant be the first member here to search for a large wall map showing Lincolnshire on one edge and showing Koenigsberg (Kaliningrad)/ Munich/ etc near the other side. I'm not trying to cover targets as far south as Italy but if Turin/Milan/Genoa were on it would be a bonus. Has anybody been successful please ? Advice very much appreciated.
    cheers

    Hi Pete

Due to the distances involved the only way you would get everything on one sheet is 1:4,000,000 scale, in any detail a number of sheets at a scale of1:2,000,000 or beyond that several sheets at 1:500,000. I’ve listed links to digital copies below.

One sheet that covers the entire area you mention can be found at –
    http://maps.mapywig.org/m/ALLIED_map...4M_05.1944.jpg

    For improved detail a combination of sheets B1, B2, C1 and C2 from –
    https://library.mcmaster.ca/maps/ind...000-scale-maps

Plotting maps at 1:2,000,000 scale can be found here but do not quite reach far enough east –
    https://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/i...acrepo%3A81942
    https://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/i...acrepo%3A81940

At much larger scale and needing several sheets can be viewed here –
    https://library.mcmaster.ca/maps/ind...000-scale-maps

All of these can be downloaded so guess your next challenge is finding a best fit solution and someone who can print out sheets at A1 or even A0.

    Kind regards
    Pierre

If I cant find a "clean copy" Jim, I shall probably get this one cleaned up (the dirty mark down the centre crease) and see how it scrubbs up.
    I'll keep you posted

Many thanks, Jim for the McMaster link. A terrific resource. I've written it up on my blog https://dambustersblog.com/2021/01/1...free-download/

I have seen maps similar to the 3rd and 4th in Pierre's links on eBay in the last month but was not interested in them. It might be worth checking if you want to own a copy to put on your wall and may be cheaper than getting a print of those in the links.

I started a bit of a discussion on this in the past. Here is a recent thread:

    http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...avigator+chart

There is a link on this thread for a downloadable chart for the raid to Chemnitz, Mach 5, 1945, which my dad was on.

I had asked on an earlier thread if anyone had an unused navigator’s chart That could be digitized and then GIS mapped. That would be be very useful as a template on which to plot routes of interest. No one was able to provide that.

I wonder if the IWM would have a “blank” chart/s? Might be worth an inquiry. I know there were several versions of these for different ranges and uses.

Has anyone managed to successfully overlay one of these maps onto Google Earth so that routes can be mapped onto it ..... I have tried many times, but can't quite get them to overlay properly (plus I needed the map to go slightly further south and further east to cover all 35 Squadron operations).

If anyone can get the cleaned up one properly overlaid, I would be very interested in seeing it

    Regards

    Thank you Gents

That McMaster example which you found Jim is pretty much the sort of thing which would do my job, thanks for getting me started. Off we go !

PeteT: I have not done this yet. The main hurdle, I see, is the very small scale of these charts, 1:1,000,000 or even 1:4,000,000. The problem is the process of georeferencing may be problematic. Typically, such efforts are with much larger scale maps or charts: 1:40,000 or larger. So there may be disconnects with different areas on the charts with satellite mapping programs. Georeferencing is quite different than simply overlaying a chart onto Google Earth.

This is not something I have done so I will have to pass it on to someone with expertise.

Edit: the Bomber Command chart for Western Germany, referenced in my previous posts is a 1:1,000,000 scale chart.

Pete: in my “Perfect World” I would have a digitized, georeferenced , Bomber Command Navigator’s Chart, upon which KML files of routes can be uploaded, and that can be toggled back and forth with Google Earth.

That’s what I want! My problem is I’m a technological Luddite!
