Hi Pete: I didnít get anywhere with the IWM. Iíd be curious what you find out from RAF Hendon.

I brought this up again because I had forgotten about the very large 1.55 Gig map wanted to ensure you were aware of it.

If I cant find a "clean copy" Jim, I shall probably get this one cleaned up (the dirty mark down the centre crease) and see how it scrubbs up.
    I'll keep you posted

Many thanks, Jim for the McMaster link. A terrific resource. I've written it up on my blog https://dambustersblog.com/2021/01/1...free-download/

Has anyone managed to successfully overlay one of these maps onto Google Earth so that routes can be mapped onto it ..... I have tried many times, but can't quite get them to overlay properly (plus I needed the map to go slightly further south and further east to cover all 35 Squadron operations).

If anyone can get the cleaned up one properly overlaid, I would be very interested in seeing it

    Regards

PeteT: I have not done this yet. The main hurdle, I see, is the very small scale of these charts, 1:1,000,000 or even 1:4,000,000. The problem is the process of georeferencing may be problematic. Typically, such efforts are with much larger scale maps or charts: 1:40,000 or larger. So there may be disconnects with different areas on the charts with satellite mapping programs. Georeferencing is quite different than simply overlaying a chart onto Google Earth.

This is not something I have done so I will have to pass it on to someone with expertise.

Edit: the Bomber Command chart for Western Germany, referenced in my previous posts is a 1:1,000,000 scale chart.

    A good description:

    Georeferencing:

Georeferencing is the process of taking a digital image, it could be an airphoto, a scanned geologic map, or a picture of a topographic map, and adding geographic information to the image so that GIS or mapping software can 'place' the image in its appropriate real world location. This process is completed by selecting pixels in the digital image and assigning them geographic coordinates.

QGIS is a possible open source software to do this.

I have tried this a few times with smaller scale maps but the differing projections mean the map has to be distorted in more than one dimension. I don't think Google Earth lets you distort images - if it can please tell me how. I have a number of large maps where the longitude is drawn as parallel lines making the UK look a bit odd and also difficult to overlay on a National Grid map. Admiralty charts differ again. The result is a lot of locations have to be re-plotted on the standard OS format maps.
