    Default Norman GILL

    Hi

In regard to Norman Gill, he was killed by a drunk driver.

W.O. Stanley Redver Baker (42 years) drove a service's vehicle under the influence on the Gainsborough-Market Rasen road, near Calnby Corner, at 10.15pm on Sunday 31 May 1942 and knocked down Gill and Corporal Norma Outhart who were walking arm in arm.

Charged with manslaughter but I do not know the result.

    Regards,

    Graeme

    Hello

Sgt (WOp/Ag) Donald BROADHURST - 1311690 - the Graves Registration Report Form lists his unit as 26 O.T.U. The Manchester Evening News of June 9th 1942 reported the following:

Sgt Donald Broadhurst (30), Buckingham Road, Wilmslow, reported killed in a crash after action over enemy territory.

Bill Chorley's BCL volume 7, page 121, has him in Wellington 1c DV709 'F', crashed returning from Cologne at 04.35 on May 31st near Soham Flour Mill. Two crew killed, and Broadhurst is listed as one of three injured, and it is stated that these injured were removed to hospital at Ely.

AC1 Norman GILL - 147704 - the Nottingham Journal of July 2nd 1942 reported the result of the trial of Baker:

RAF Man Absolved of Manslaughter and Other Charges
After a hearing that had lasted for a day and a half, a jury at Notts. Assizes yesterday found Warrant Officer Stanley Redvers Baker (42), of the Royal Air Force, "Not guilty" of the manslaughter of Aircraftman Norman Gill, who was knocked down and killed by an R.A.F. van which Baker was driving in Lincs. on the night of Sunday 31 May, last.
They also returned a verdict of "Not guilty" on an alternative charge of dangerous driving.
Baker was then formally charged with driving a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of drink to such an extent as to render him incapable of having proper control of the vehicle. On this charge counsel offered no evidence and the judge directed the jury to return a verdict of "Not guilty."
    Baker was accordingly dicharged.

F/Sgt (Obs) David M. BAIRD - RCAF R/76305 - 16 OTU - his R.C.A.F. records have him missing from Wellington DV828, baled out over the North Sea after control was lost in cloud, along with 944083 F/Sgt Tom Cook and 580430 W/O Brian Doyle. One of the two surviving crew members is listed as 742846 W/O E. W. Smith.

    Regards

    Simon
