According to Google, Laventure is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, in St. John's, Newfoundland. This is somewhat unusual, since his family and his wife were from Ontario, and standard Canadian military practice for domestic deaths was to return the body to a home town, unless express instructions otherwise were left. I guess possibly Newfoundland was still considered "overseas" in September 1945. The RCAF casualty list for 17 September 1945 lists him as "killed accidentally".

As in the RAF, an RCAF Corporal in 1945 would not be aircrew, or even ground crew working on aircraft.

LAVENTURE's service file is available on Ancestry.com and the cause of death was

    LAVENTURE, H H A Cpl.
    44 R.U. Fogo Island, RCAF

basically he was hit by a American Army truck whist walking on a road with another airman at RAF station Torbay.

Thanks Dennis. 44 Radio Unit was a coastal radar station. Most of these were at very remote locations, like Fogo Island. I expect Laventure was on leave when he died.

When I get a chance I'll read more into the service file, it even has a photo of the truck!
