Norton, Leslie John - Sub/Lt (A) - RANVR - 801 Sqn FAA - HMS Implacable - Sydney War Cemetery, New South Wales - [ Seafire Serial number unknown. RNAS Schofield's - On an authorised flight the a/c disintegrated in a dive and crashed. Witness recalled it being a Seafire F.III but 801 had XV's. Others squadrons there had F.III's so it is possible that it was an F.III or XV ].

    Hello,

AUSTRALIA - Sub-Lieut (A) Leslie John NORTON RANVR (Att. to Royal Navy).

I have an undated/unsourced note in my file on Leslie John NORTON RANVR, reminding me to check Seafire XV's SR536/SR584. I have no idea where that information came from, but the note is not in my handwriting! I don't have access to my copy of FAA Aircraft 1939-1945/Sturtivant & Burrow at the moment - could someone please check their copy?

Norton had transferred from the RAAF (432248), to the RANVR, on 17 June, 1945. Whilst with the RAAF, he was involved in two accidents - the first on 9 November, 1943, in No.5 Sqn RAAF Boomerang A46-35, and secondly, on 21 May, 1944, in No.4 Sqn RAAF Wirraway A20-343. On both occasions he was uninjured.

    Col.

    Alex,

Thanks. I have no further information on those Seafires, only the note!
