A mystery solved! He appears in the death records as 'Male J Simpson', aged 28, killed in Holborn.
Paul: thanks for this. I couldn't find a connection between William Jones and David Jones. I thought they might be brothers, but they appear in different households in 1939 (and in 1911). It is possible that they are cousins, or the coincidence of a very common name.

Apologies: I should have replied with the quote. 971659 Corporal George William Simpson. There are two George W Simpsons in the index to the death records, one in Hull and one in Scarborough, but neither seemed right. He is buried in Ripon, but checks against the 1939 Register suggested that the George Simpson buried in Ripon was not the George Simpson who died in Scarborough or Hull. With Jon H's help, it became clear that this is one of those cases in which the death record does not contain a first name or the first name is inaccurate.

3,945 are still unaccounted.
We have a mix up. The entry for 846489 Barrett , should be the entry for 1308826 Barrett
