34225 Sergeant Davis JONES

A somewhat puzzling case, perhaps due to the fact that this is a very common name. According to the probate record, Sergeant Jones died at the Stanley Hospital in Liverpool on 29 April 1941. A story in the Liverpool Echo reports that an inquest into the death of David Jones, aged 55, a joiner from Walker Street, Blackley, Manchester, found that he received fatal injuries in a crane accident at the Liverpool docks. This is the right age and address, as well as date. A funeral notice in the Manchester Evening News provides the same information.

It is possible that Sergeant Jones was working in the docks in a service capacity, or perhaps he had already left the forces but was reported as a service death anyway. Others on this forum might have a better idea of the explanation, but it does appear to be him.

He was in a MU, I'll see if I can double check in the week

Frank Smith 1268490 ,was killed at 18:45 Hours near Saida, when the lorry he was driving, RAF 61535 collided with Army lorry WD 4464320 in which the driver Gunner L.W. Cook 41239, also died

were engaged in the unit's movement from Bizerte to Cerignola 3 Airfield via Naples , when thier vehicle crashed on the mountainous roads, Reddin being killed and the other airmen suffering serious injuries

John Eric Milnes 1073189 , A PTI attached to Number 14 ( P) AFU , took a party of ATC cadets who were visiting the unit to the beach at Fraserburgh but Cadet MacLeod got into difficulties swimming at 17:30 Hours being swept away by the current , Milne and Cadets Sgt Simpson and Cpl Weir went to MCleod's aid but Milne himself tired and got into trouble.. after Macleod was on the shore , Cadet McKinnon and 1117123 Sgt L.T.T . Smith, 1083980 Cpl Crossley and 1593805 Cpl Wragg , swam out to Milne , who by now was floating on his back, feebly moving and arm and with glassy eyes,. Mckiinon brought him part way fo shore but was exhausted and the others soon tired and had to leave Milne. Macleod was in a very poor condition and developed pneumonia and only barely survived the ordeal .

I think this should be No 2 SFTS at RAF Brize Norton, No 2 EFTS was at Filton?

"Lawrence Smart 1639421 , was killed when a Lancaster based at RAF Upton, hit his tent ( at RAF Lasham ? ) when returning from operations . Another airmen lost a foot and and arm at the elbow and had his chest ripped open but he was resuscitated at SSQ and survived"

This was probably Lancaster III, JB217 of No 156 Sqn from RAF Upwood (not Upton), which crash landed at RAF Dunsfold.
