    Paul,
    Tx for all yr work!
There seems to be sufficient weight of evidence to call him Harry Mildred Simpson.
I was firstly put off by Mildred as a middle Forename. This is normally, in UK, a female Forename.
The date most often given (1945) also threw me a bit. Simpson was POW by March 1943, having 'gone in the bag' from Halifax JB840 of 102 Sqn.
The Forum POW DB entry for Sgt H M Simpson gives his s/n as 115659. This Officer's Number(!) belongs to a George Rothwell - Cmd A/Plt Off(p) on 31 Dec 41.
So with all these uncertainties I began to look upon our H M Simpson's data with a great deal of scepticism, and so called upon the wider Forum for help (and he's not the only one!!).
Does anybody know (a) did he complete the POW Questionnaire on release?, (b) has anybody got it, or seen it?, and (c) will it/does it help?
    TIA
(And thanks to all for yr various helps!)
    Peter Davies

    Peter,
The aircraft loss card gives Simpson's service number as 1115659, and 'Mildred' might seem to be an interpretation of a hard-to-read entry in AIR78/144/3, page 131, bottom of the right hand column.
    Regards, Mark.

    Mark (et al), Tks yrs,
FREEBMD gives us 2 x Harry M Simpson in the period (for England & Wales):-

    Births Q4 1920 Simpson Harry M Lakin Leicester 7a 404
    Births Q1 1921 Simpson Harry M Middleton Whitby 9d 828

Now - it was a frequently observed custom at that time, when naming children, to include the Mother's Maiden Surname as one of the Forenames. This would seem to make the Whitby Q1 1921 Simpson favourite?
1115659 Enlists around mid-Dec 1940 at Padgate. This would make our putative man aged 19 - fits? Whitby is only 100 miles from Padgate.

Are we likely to get any more specific evidence?
    HTH

He is definitely Harry M Simpson from Hartlepool - See news reports on PoW- The fact that he married fits as well - what is interesting is entry below Parents address in 1939 Register and Newsreports match as well

I wonder if he was named after a distance relative... The Hartlepool reference is telling

Ps my middle name is similar in that it is my mothers maiden name and it could be considered a female name if you heard me speak it though it is spelt differently
