Default WWII RAF Ground staff trade - RDF Mech R

    Hi all,

I am trying to decipher a WWII RAF Ground staff trade recorded as "RDF Mech R".

I suppose it would be Radio Direction Finder Mechanic but what means the "R"?

    TIA

    Pavel,
Just a guess - he might be a Radar Mech on the Receivers - and their subsequent display apparatus?
Ian The Radar (if he's on the cct) will, no doubt, put us right!

I believe that it was ...

    RDF Mech (Radar)

The electronic trades in the RAF were of course all very recent in the RAF,Trade Groups and designations were probably changing as the years passed.
I am assuming that RDF Mech (Radar) was a trade group to differentiate between the Air Radar and Ground Radar trade designations.

Scrolling down to page X-43 of the link I posted above gives us ....

Thank you! It fits as in my case the person was member of 311 Sq ground staff in period when equipped with Liberators and serving at CC so the ASV option fits.

    Hi Pavel
It is only an assumption on my part - post war the electronic trade groups were many and complicated - and constantly changing,by the early 1970's they were gradually being whittled down to only a few trade groups.
Of course we called all the electronic tradesmen 'Fairies' :).
