    Default Unaccounted airmen - 1-10-1940

    What caused the death of and/or what were the places of death registration for:

    P/O James L. GILLESPIE - 76902 - 23 Sqn (Ford, Sussex) - died of wounds or injuries received on active service;
    AC2 John GREENHALGH - 1003727 - killed on active service, and
    LAC Harold E. HART - 370439 - not found Flight archives.

    Proposed aircraft loss for this day:
    Hurricane I - L1871 - 6 OTU - crashed on approach Sutton Bridge.

    Regards and thanks for your help.
    Henk.

    Hi Henk
    Gillespie 34,is registered at Chichester which is right for an incident at Ford. There is a John Greenhalgh,24, registered at Pembroke in S Wales. There are several others of the same name but they are in their late 50's and upwards. CWGC doesn't give an age!!. Hart, 35, is registered at Thornbury which is in Gloucestershire, about 10 mls N of Bristol. The Hurricane at Sutton Bridge is in Lincolnshire near the area we call the Wash(a big sea inlet) on the East Coast
    Regards
    Dick

    Interestingly Gillespie's entry in The Men of the Battle of Britain states that he died in St Richard's Hospital, Chichester "not as a result of active service".

    LAC Harold E. HART - 370439 was involved at Narvik and his death and burial at Thornbury is a mystery. I have had a file on him for a while and will trey to research the cause of death.

    Harold Edgar Hart 370439 , attached to RAF Filton, died there of a self inflicted hanging, possibly really a victim of the air raid the previous week
