Default 180 Sqn Mitchell II EV-P photo - where...?

    Hello everyone

There's a photo of 180 Squadron Mitchell II EV-P on the Getty Image website here:

    https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail...-photo/3380008

The caption states it is being repaired (reassembled?), and the date is given as December 14th 1944. I think (he says with no great confidence!) that this MAY be FW199, damaged by flak on August 6th 1944 and force-landed at Airfield B.7, Cat. B/Ac. It was however back with 180 Sqn by November 5th 1944.

So, where might this photo have been taken? At an M.U. or perhaps Melsbroek? And does December 14th 1944 sound right?

I've e-mailed Getty to see if there are any more details, but would appreciate everyone's thoughts...

    Regards

    Hello Simon,

I've seen this very picture being captioned as taken at Melsbroek in December 1944.

    Hello Simon

A french book by "Editions Atlas" about the B-25 Mitchell, from the 80es. It was later published as a bound volume on medium bombers with similar books on the Mosquito and the He-111. One of the authors was using "Mister Kit" as an alias.

    Maybe in "2nd T.A.F." by Shores & Thomas ?

Another quick (hopefully...) question about FW199. I can't seem to find it on Joe Baugher's website:

    http://www.joebaugher.com/usaf_serials/1943_1.html

That page has a selection of FW19* and FW20* serialled Mitchells, but seems to be missing a few including FW199. I'm guessing it would be in the same block as the other FW19*/FW20* Mitchells, so a B-25D-30?

The Form 78 for FW199 has:

    ex-USA en route to UK
    F.I.S. [F15?] 17.1.44
    12 M.U. 61 10.2.44 [at Kirkbride?]
    416 A.R.F. [Aircraft Reception Flight?] 10.6.44
and then into service with 180 Sqn 22.6.44

It seems it had the FN68 lower turret fitted like some other Mitchell IIs of 180 Squadron, presumably by 12 M.U.?

    Simon,

I had an exchange with Joe Baugher the other day about some Grumman Trackers missing from a USN serial block on his site - he explained that he didnít have information on the missing aircraft and they were therefore omitted.

Thanks Robert. I guess there would be some gaps, due to the sheer scale of numbers involved.

I've got a copy of Key Publishing's 'Combat Machines No.02' about the Mitchell, and it has FW199 as part of the batch of B-25D-30-NC with serials from FW144 to FW249.

    Regards

    Simon

EDIT - the Crowood Press' B-25 Mitchell book by Jerry Scutts has FW199 as ex 43-3465 (page 184).
