    Default Squadron Establishment

    Hi,

Can anyone tell me what the actual aircraft establishment is in numbers ?

    LWE/SR/1052

Its for a 38 Group Stirling squadron circa January 1944.

    TIA

    Hi Steve,

No idea but maybe a clue in MJF Bowyer The Stirling Story. On 5th January 1944, 190 Squadron establishment was 16 immediate equipment + 4 immediate reserve. Although maybe a little theoretical as he goes on to say they were using bomber variants to train on that date, the first Mk IV arriving on 21st January.

Peter, re the establishment you detail, this would be correct (at least as regards the squadron you introduced), but I think that should read 16 Initial (not Immediate) Equipment + 4 Immediate Reserve. This was incidentally a standard Aircraft Establishment for a good proportion of WW2 RAF squadrons, including Bomber and Fighter Commands, although as usual, any particular squadron in any theatre could have its establishment amended up or down for various good reasons, including Bomber Commands "three-Flight" squadrons (including the Battle-equipped squadrons at beginning of the war), and Coastal Command's 269 Squadron in Iceland, just to name some random examples.
