Default Sad to report...Frances McLaren (RIP)

The death in her 99th year of Frances McLaren, who was probably the last living person from RAF Helensburgh during WW2. A remarkable woman who joined from school the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment. She was very much a woman in a man's world as part of the scientific staff. Among her duties she analysed, under guard, film of the Barnes Wallis Highball 'bouncing bomb' trials on Loch Striven. Her colleagues included scientist James Hamilton, later Sir James, knighted for design work on Concorde. They were life long friends. A change of the daily rota probably saved her life when the Short Scion experimental aircraft crashed killing Mr H G White, who had taken her place. Frances-nee Shedden-was married for more than 50 years to a colleague she met at RAF Helensburgh. Post war she served at RAF Felixstowe. Bright as a button to the end I will miss our regular chats about her wartime role. RIP Frances.

So sorry to hear of her loss. Maybe she will receive honours for her service now ?
