Default Beaufighter LZ445 - trying to find aircraft letter

    Hi All,

Does anyone happen to know the individual aircraft letter of this aircraft please?

It served briefly with 404 (RCAF) Squadron until written off in a crash on 16 November 1943. I don`t
need details on the accident. I just need the letter to make up a profile.

    Regards. Dave.

    Dave,
As you may know, it doesn't appear anywhere in the ORB from August 1943, when the squadron was equipped almost exclusively with XICs, until the date of its loss.
All I can do is rule out a lot of codes, which were current both before and after 16 November 1943:
    B LZ177
    D LZ403
    G LZ294
    J LZ179
    N LZ296
    O LZ439
    Q LZ189
    S LZ291
    V LZ441
    X LZ176
    Z LZ295

Hi Andy, yes, the ORB events was a starting point, and I had no luck either, I wondered if it was mentioned somewhere in the summary pages or in an appendix and I had missed it. Ah well, thanks for taking the trouble to list the others, if nothing turns up I`ll either leave it out completely or use a random letter not in your list. I always add little profiles to the stories I write in the books and try as best to get the correct aircraft and markings. Regards Dave.

    Dave

Can you advise which airfield and Group the aircraft was based in when lost?

A lot of the Coastal Command ORBs seem to have such details listed under their respective daily narratives, so fingers crossed someone might have the relevant extracts.

    Cheers
    Pierre

Yes, H is a good possibility. The previous holder will have been LZ174, which was damaged beyond repair on 20 Oct 43.

Which Dave are you asking? I have very little more except to add that the a/c was of 404 RCAF Squadron at Wick.

    Hi DaveW

Intended for Dave 'Highgroundsman' as original poster. Sadly Wick is too far north for any of my Group or Station ORBs. That said my great-uncle S/L A.B. Mitchell was based at Wick with 1406 Flt until his death in an accident at another site, so would be equally pleased to hear from anyone with the Station ORB for 1943, a whole period of family history that did not become known about until after my mum had passed away. Discussed previously at http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...highlight=wick

    Kind regards
    Pierre

Hi Dave W / Andy , thanks for the tip that it could be `H`. If nothing else turns up between now and finishing the project I`ll go with that.

Hi Pierre, The accident happened 1 mile north of Wick airfield.

    Regards.
    Dave.
