    Default F/O E T HOAR C/35274 PoW

    Hi all,

F/O HOAR Elmer Thomas, C35274, RCAF, last reported Form 541 of No. 442 Squadron, 7 Nov 44, Spitfire LF IX PT402, bombing.

He became PoW during November - December 1944. When and what Squadron?

Could anyone tell the circumstances of his capture, please?

    Regards

    Mojmír

    He's recorded as Elmer T. Hoare in Air 40/269 Milag-Morlag Nord-Oflag L (ex-Stalag Luft III) with date of capture listed as November 10th 1944, P.o.W. Nº 8868.

He was reported as being a P.o.W. in the Lethbridge Herald of December 29th 1944:

HOAR, Elmer Thomas, FO, E. P. C. Hoar (father), Bethune, Sask.

Thank you very much, Simon. Isn’t it strange? An officer of RCAF disappeared without a trace (from 442 Sqn) and probably his Spitfire or another a/c, too..

Nevertheless, after the war he flew Sabres: page 6

May not have been POW as a result of air operations

    Not sure about that Paul.
Spitfire NH537 was lost on the 9th November 1944 with 442 Sqn.
Coincidence maybe but that is(as far as I could find) the last time that Hoare was mentioned in the ORB.

It is possible, Alex. For Nov. 9/44 there is "NIL"

    Hello Mojmir,
    Many thanks for the link.
Too late now to edit my post "6" above, so here is the revised list.
    1st November 44 - NH369.
    2nd November 44 - MJ463.
    3rd November 44 - nil.
    4th November 44 - PL324, twice.
    5th November 44 - MK550.
    6th November 44 - PT402.
    7th November 44 - PT402.
    8th November 44 - nil.
    9th November 44 - nil
    10th November 44 - nil.

The ORB only shows operational sorties, where are those non-operational flights recorded ?

So whatever happened it looks Iike he must have had some event happen between the 8th and 10th when he became a POW.

My suggestion is that he was perhaps involved with NH537 , but that a/c was not lost in enemy territory as I understand from the ORB it was used twice on the 28th October 44, by Simpson in the am and Baker in the pm. After which not mentioned again. But something happened to it on the 9th, "cac ops" so who was the pilot ?

Which leaves Hoare's(as in ORB) capture an open question. Did he fill out one of those forms after released from captivity ?

    Alex
