Hi all,

I would like to ask for an assistance in matter I got lost. I have a photo of a Wellington with a code "9N" on its nose believed to be taken in 1944 and of No. 82 OTU.

1) Was it common to have a code on the nose? I suppose it may be useful in case of OTU with plenty of aircraft.
2) Were there any general rules how the code should look like? No. 82 OTU has been allocated codes „9C“ and „TD“ so my idea is that the code has been always shortened for the nose to two letter only, i.e. "9N" stands for „9C o N“ while „TD o N“ will have "TN"? Would it be possible or my idea is just a nonsense?

Any help will be much appreciated.

TIA

Pavel
