Default Pair of 223 Sqn Baltimores - code letters?

    Hello everyone

Long shot, but can anyone give me the individual code letters for the following two Baltimores of 223 Sqn:

Baltimore II AG774, crash landed June 12th 1942

    Baltimore III AG843, lost September 1st 1942

On both occasions they were flown by Percy Wilson Carruthers D.F.M. (gazetted March 1943), who became a P.o.W. after the second incident and was Mentioned in Despatches for distinguished service whilst a prisoner.

    Many thanks,

    Simon

    Hello,

Can't help with the individual letters, but the following book "might" help:

    Of Ploughs, Planes & Palliasses
    Carruthers,Percy Wilson.

    Thanks for the reply Col

I do actually have a copy of Percy's book, and it's a really good read including good accounts of the two losses, but doesn't have any serials or codes.

    Hello,
Re AG774. The date given in the 1st post is 12th June 1942.
While Gunby &Temple in vol 1 of BL n the Middle St ad Mediterranean
Has the date as 27th June 1942.
Or is the 12th June 1942 an earlier crash ?

You're absolutely right, I most humbly plead a case of either finger trouble or a senior moment.

June 27th, page 155 in Bomber Losses in the Middle East & Mediterranean:

Took off LG 116 on relocation and shot down by fighters, crashing 32km SE of LG100 (Wadi Natrun) at 1055 hrs. SOC 1.1.47 by inventory entry.

    Hello Simon,
No problem, glad to know that others get typo errors :)
