Default TNA Squadron ORB's release dates?

    Hello everyone

The National Archives has ORBs available from 1911 to 1963 - I'm wondering if/when they may release some from 1963 onwards? Presumably a fixed time period afterwards?

    Regards

I thought they had more recent ORB's but just not digitised them yet, unless the are searchable but still labelled CLOSED

    PNK

Yes, you are of course right. I hadn't picked up on the fact that more recent ORBs could be viewed at Kew, but weren't digitised as yet:

For example 23 Squadron 1966-1986 was opened in 1998, but isn't available online to view.

I think my question should have been 'when will they be available to view online.' I'm guessing that's down to TNA priorities and staffing?

I dare say there are many different priorities, not only at TNA but in the minds of the various members :)

I wonder if they have a plan for digitisation as it will certainly save time but not money once the free downloads are stopped - I am looking at every squadron for all years and then stations- and then OTUs and then............)

I haven't been to TNA for a few years as my readers ticket ran out and the queue to renew was longer than my patience and my ability to stand still without getting backache.

I thought I'd ask the National Archives, and I got this reply:

The digitisation of public records is not covered by our Public Task and therefore no formal procedure for requesting the digitisation of public records exists, and no budget for such activity is available. Typically such cost are covered though educational grants as well as by commercial partners in the event they wish to publish National Archive records. Any digitisation also require approval from our internal Discovery Board.

So basically, they don't seem to know when either...
