    Default Confusing ORB entry

Can anyone suggest what this ORB entry is meant to say?

The target for operations was DORTMUND so Im slightly confused.

" S. and M. probably ESSEN of HAMBURG was bombed from a height of 13,000 feet. The result of the attack was not observed...."

    Any suggestions welcomed.

    thanks

Daz what date it was? Have you checked the Night Raid Report?

Hi and thank you both for commenting.

The date was 8th June 1941. I don't have the raid report. The operation order states that the primary target was ESSEN B but the ORB summary states the primary was DORTMUND. Op Order 254 states:

    " TARGET - PRIMARY; ESSEN B, alternate + L.R.: S and M Germany"

So you can see why Im a bit confused.

Sorry Daz, I am not able to help with Night Raid Report for this date and 311 Sq was only attacking Brest - as most of the No. 3 Group squadrons - in the night 7/8 June 1941.

Ian would be right with LR = Last Resort but "S and M Germany" is quite a mystery for me...

    Daz,
    I have seen this in the 102 Squadron appendices for 1940 where they have Last Resort as;

    Shipping, (particularly Barges) in Germany.
    Any Military objectives in Germany.

As the months went on this seemed to be shortened to S and M Germany.

    Pete

many thanks, that could be a possible solution. I have spent the last few hours pour over Op Orders from 1940 and 1941 and wondered if S. and M. was an abbreviation of an abbreviation. "S" being S.E.M.O and "M" being M.O.P.A. and those abbreviations standing for Self Evident Military Objective and Military Objective Previously Attacked; but shipping sounds more plausible.

I fully agree that the LR aspect is Last Resort as the Station Op Order shows the targets as:

    Primary - ESSEN B
Alternative and Last Resort as S and M in Germany.

I am still confused as to why HAMBURG is mentioned as this would be miles off track of the planned route, which was:

FILEY BAY - DEN HALDER - TARGET - DEN HALDER - FILEY BAY

I guess it will just be one of those puzzles that remains a mystery.

Just a thought: Could it be "Homburg", west of the Rhine across from Duisburg, i.e. misspelled or misread by the typist? That town is 20 km west of Essen and possibly on the route.

I think you've solved part of the puzzle in that it should read,

"S. and M. Probably ESSEN or HOMBURG was bombed from a height of 13,000 feet."

    Thanks
