Default RAF Upavon Station ORB, Sep 1926-Jan 1927

Does anyone have the RAF Upavon station ORB for September 1926 to January 1927, please?

As far as I can determine, Flt Lt William Geoffrey MEGGITT was on the station staff for engineering duties, WEF 6 Sep 26, when he was killed in a flying accident in a 41 Sqn Siskin on 28 January 1927.

I am interested to know what the ORB records of the accident and why (long shot) Meggitt was flying a 41 Sqn aircraft, when 41 Sqn was based at Northolt at the time and 3 & 17 Sqns were based at Upavon. For reference, I have been unable to locate a casualty card in the RAF Museum vault.

I already have a lot of detail on Meggitt's life and career and it's just this question I am seeking to answer - why was he flying a 41 Sqn aircraft as RAF Upavon Eng Off? Or am I missing a piece of the puzzle...?

    Many thanks in advance

    Hello Steve,

    A-B's J1-J9999/Thompson & Sturtivant/1987/p.38, has Siskin J7171 subsequently repaired, converted to Dual Control, and issued to CFS, Upavon - 8.30 - 3.33.

Just seen photo of wreckage in Sheffield Independent - Saturday 29 January 1927 (no visible serial) - I doubt this was repaired

    - Meggitt had just been elected member of Royal Aero Club at meeting of Nov 10 1926 (source Flight)

Westminster Gazette - Saturday 29 January 1927 Newspaper says

"The pilot, who was strapped to his seat, was Flight-Lieut. W. G. Meggitt, M.C.. attached to No. 41 squadron at Northolt Aerodrome. He was a native of Nottingham and was appointed to station headquarters at Upavon in September, being posted for emergency duties. He was on a trial flight."

    Many thanks gents

Paul, that was the link I was seeking, thank you! So, he was attached to 41 Sqn; excellent. I went through several newspaper articles (via Gale) seeking the elusive clue, but a lot of reports were repetitious and I had not come across the Westminster Gazette, so thank you very much for looking it up and posting it.

Heart-breaking, though, isn't it? I mean, he survived the Western Front in the trenches, survived aerial fighting (awarded an MC), survived being shot down & WIA, survived being a POW, and ultimately lost his life in a gale in peacetime over suburban London.

    Regards
