He was indeed, Eric Barwell's air gunner. Their incident which ended with them in the sea was rather something - Barwell had no option but to ditch after losing all the glycol in his Defiant. He was attempting to ditch when he stalled from about 20ft. Williams was sat partially out of his turret and upon impact was catapulted completely out of the Defiant. Barwell, after getting clear of the aircraft, had spotted Williams unconscious and floating face down - he swam to him and turned him over, holding him up until they were rescued.
