    Hi Alex

    WATSON-PARKER, Patrick Ian - Sgt -741433 - RAFVR.
Cudham (SS. Peter and Paul ) Churchyard, Orpington, Kent.
    Spitfire Ia - R6807 - 610 Sqn.
This is a bit of a curly one. Sgt Patrick Ian Watson-Parker - incorrectly referred to in some documents as Patrick Peter - was actually a member of 263 Squadron and had been since formation on 11 October 1939 when he was posted in from 605 Squadron.

In AIR 81/2389, there are reports from the COs of both 263 and 610 Squadron, which note Sgt Watson-Parker being 'on the strength of 263 Sqn'. 610 Squadron's report states:-

"In Spitfire R.6807 this pilot although attached to No.5 O.T.U, Aston Down, was apparently loaned to 6 M.U. Brize Norton, to ferry the aircraft to this unit on allotment. It was his first flight in a Spitfire, and he had only limited experience on Hurricanes. His Commanding Officer reports that he was an experienced Gladiator pilot and was at Aston Down on a conversion course to TWINS.

From information received the pilot appears to have stalled at about 400/500 feet, when turning down wind on landing circuit, his wheels were not down, and to have spun into the ground, death being instantaneous on impact."

Location was Skid Hill near Tatsfield at approximately 1505.

It appears that Sgt Watson-Parker was at 5 O.T.U. in preparation for flying Whirlwinds which were starting to be delivered to 263 Squadron. Later in the month, the ORB records that "P/O Bell was killed as a result of a flying accident while on a course on Blenheims at No. 5 O.T.U." (741449 Eric Wilfred BELL).

Side note: Sgt Watson-Parker also has a second AIR 81 file from October 1939 when he crashed Gladiator K6145 in the Severn river - AIR 81/1602. This file is still closed.

    Regards,

    Jeff
