    Default Balloon Bombs results ?

    Hello,

I had heard of the Japanese attempts to bomb America by using balloons but had never heard of the earlier British attempts to bring down Luftwaffe aircraft by Bomb carrying balloons.

In the early days of WW2 it seems that as part of the defence of Britain Balloon device's carrying a bomb were used over London and Liverpool. These blood bombs were expected to damage or destroy enemy aircraft.
Were they successful, if so how many ?
    and
Were there any Blue on blue events. ?

    Thanks
    Alex

    Alex,
The only “offensive” balloon actions in WW2 that the Met Team know about are at:-

    There may be others!!!
Although whether they were any good is open to debate!!

    Alex,

Could you provide the source for your information about the British balloon bombs, please? I'm aware of the leaflet delivery by balloons, but nothing else.

    Hi Brian,

Operation Outward was the free flight offensive

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Outward

There was possible another scheme Operation Albino to use balloons to suspend wires with explosives sown as an aerial minefield - I will try to dig out the references

    Operation Albino,Petard etc

    http://www.bbrclub.org/free_balloon_operations_in_world.htm

but this is usually confused with Long Aerial Mines which did not use balloons.

I suspect this is referring to plans to attach explosive charges to the balloon cables: then when the bomber flew into the cable, the cable would slide along/up/down the wing and when one of these charges came into contact with the wing it would explode. Sorry, I can't quote a source nor even say whether or not these were ever used operationally.

    Hello

There's the book "Balloons at war" by John Christopher, Tempus, 2004 which I recommend. The book covers operation Outward.

I have found Gendarmerie reports in France, about remains of balloons being found in the countryside, with the incendiary devices which are matching the description of the incendiary devices used by "Outward". There were also balloons with wires to disrupt High Tension power lines.

The intention was mostly to set fire to cornfields, etc... where they are very dry in the summer. Some fires were indeed started in France, with no obvious causes found, and it's very likely they were started by balloons from "Outward".

    Hello Brian,

    From AHB.
    Within "Thematic Studdies "
    Balloon Defense 1914 - 1945
Under the "M" section, look for "Albino" on page 396 to 406.
