    Hi Paul,

Combining information from the 151 Sqn. ORB and the AIR 81/602 casualty file for Trice one can put together the following timeline.
The four 151 Sqn. pilots only left Martlesham by road for North Weald at 2000 hours on the 16th . They were to report to Hendon by 0700 hours next day (ORB has the 16th , but this cannot be correct) before going to France. This date clarification is greatly supported by information from his widow in his AIR 81 casualty file to the effect that she met him to say goodbye on the evening of May 17th . She understood from him that he was going to France that night or on the next day (18th ). This information was in a letter from the family solicitors to the Air Ministry dated February 1941, who obtained those details from his father who in turn had been told this by his daughter-in-law. The solicitors in the same letter also make mention of a conversation that Mr. Trice (father) had sometime earlier with someone in RAF Records at Ruislip. It concerned the handing in of Sergeant Trice’s identity disc by a Sgt. Whalley (Army) who had seen the burial and reported it as occurring on Sunday, May 19th .

    Hope this helps,

    Martin.

Martin thanks for that . It clears up the fact that it could not be him killed 16 May 1940 and the 19th makes sense

    Kind regards Paul

    Hello

To continue on this subject, and also based on the casualty pack, it'd be interesting to check the archives of the Lancashire Fusiliers, of which Sgt Whalley and Captain Lutyens were members, to see what it has to say, in terms of date, circumstances and locations. If it survived of course. They were interrogated in 1949 but this didn't bring a positive outcome.

The name of "Frendmont" in mentioned as the place of burial, and it seems the crash occured very close. Problem is that I've never been able to find a village of that name. The closest could be an old name near Namur in South Belgium, while some documents in the casualty pack put Frendmont in France. We have obviously here a name that was wrongly understood and then typed, while it's likely to be Froidmont.

Froidmont is a part of Tournai, not very far from the French border, and so close to other crash sites of the same day, so it can make sense. I don't know if local aviation historians, like Dominique Van den Broucke, have been questionned about this subject ?

    Hi,

Many thanks for the replies received.

Documents in the RAF Casualty pack (AIR 81/602) mention Froidmont and others in the same Casualty pack mentioned Frendmont.

To make it more complicated than it already was : there is a French village called Froidmont-Cohartille (postal code 02270, Laon, Aisne). Has any aircraft crashed in that area on 19/5/1940 ?

No local aviation historian has been contacted by me.

    Best regards

    Luc
