OK, but a transfer of aircraft is not the same as a detachment of a squadron - trained crews have to come from somewhere, and 109 Sq appears to be the likeliest (only) source. However, if it is to be considered as a detachment then it should be included in the histories (not the ORB) of the mother unit.

I think the best thing to do is to peruse the ORB’s for 162 Sqn. When the 109 Sqn detachment was transferred to the ME, it was initially named the “Signals Squadron”, and was equipped with six Wellington aircraft -

    Z8948/W
    Z1165/M
    Z8944/S
    Z9034/D
    Z8905/O
    X9986/X

The ORB’s for Jan/Feb/Mar 1942 give details of the work carried out by the “detachment”. By March, the Unit had been renumbered 162 Sqn

    Hi Graham

Again apologies for lack of clarity.

I didn't mean the squadron was detached, but that part of the squadron was detached. Most of it remained in the UK, and only some planes and crews made the journey to the Middle East.

    All the best
