    Default 256 Sqn victory 21/12/1943.

    Hi All,

A friend in Germany is looking for any information on his great uncle who was shot down in Ju88 from 3/LG1 by a 256 Sqn Mosquito on 21 December 1943, I’m guessing over Italy on this date. I’ve got a mate looking at the ORB, but any additional information would be gratefully received.

    Cheers,

    John.

I'm guessing you've already got this which looks related

Coordinates put it about 100 miles ESE of Malta

    Hi John,

Just from a search of AIR 50 on the National Archives website for entries labelled '256' and 1943

From the preview on that page, time is stated as 1650, height 1000ft, position 35.38N 16.54E. From the ORB it appears that the other Mosquito of this pair on convoy duty, piloted by F/O K. H. Bernau, claimed one of the JU88s - but there doesn't seem to be a combat report from him. I assume a report must have been made out but in general, it seems to be very hit-and-miss whether the reports survived to end up in AIR 50 or not.

    Cheers,

    Jeff
