Hi All, long time no see!
I found a reference to this a/c in a 2008 thread but it was only tangential (and partially linked to dreaded viruses). I have most of the details from my subject's service record, which says this Lanc was brought down by flak, but I see in another source that it was claimed by by a German night fighter. Does anyone have any details on the claim they can look up for me?
thanks
David

Some of the locations are a bit difficult to decipher but it may assist.

Hello
Culverson's R.C.A.F. Service File has a copy of the No. 4 M.R.E.U. Investigation Report, and includes two eye witness accounts from two farmers from Wagenfeld Hasslingen:
On arrival at the village I interrogated farmers Winkelmann and Moehlmeyer who were both witnesses, and on whose adjoining farms the aircraft fell. Both stated that a 4 engined bomber crashed there at approximately 01.00 hours on the 13.8.44. The aircraft had been hit by flak, and burst in the air, the tail falling about half a mile from the rest of the plane.

There is a typo in the thread title - PD260 was a 166 Sqn aircraft.
Thanks Dave, long time no chat... The witnesses account is what I am trying to square with the report of a claim by Brinkman of NGD3. The plane crashed and there was a lot of fire, so I was wondering if it was a JU88G that ripped open the fuel tanks with its cannons.

Thanks Andy. Fixed now.

Thanks Chris. There were only 7 a/c on the mission and PD260 was the only FTR, so I assume Theo Boitens matched it with Brinkman's claim. Does anyone have a copy of his book to confirm?

I note that the 166 Sqn book in the reference gives the code of PD260 as AS-U, whereas "Bomber Command Losses" states AS-N.
Which is correct please?
