    Default 950267 Robert Wedderspoon BELL

Does anyone have any information about the above airman?

I believe he was commissioned on the 19/12/41 and took on the number 114205. I know that he was gazetted with a DFC as a Flight Lieutenant with 582 Squadron in 1944. I am trying to work out what crew position he held and also where he served as a SNCO and PO. I think he may have been a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner. Any pointers gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Daz,
    Robert Wedderspoon BELL
Name (except the middle forename!) comes up too often in the “usual places”!
Mid-Dec 1939 Enlisted (mathematically – Jonny may have a better analogue date?) in Block 935000-964999, RAFVR, Cardington, Issued 01-Sep-39 to 31-Mar-40.
582 Sqn ORB may have some data?
Alternatively, you may have to go for his Service Record.
Sorry not to be of more help!

His DFC was reported, very briefly, in The Scotsman of October 13th 1944:

    Gallantry in Air Operations
The following R.A.F. awards for gallantry and devotion to duty in the execution of air operations are included in a list published to-day:
...Flt.-Lt. Robert W. Bell, R.A.F.V.R., No. 582 Sqn (Pitlochry, Perthshire).

From the Scotland's People website he was born in 1914, his birth being registered at Moulin in Perthshire.

    Daz,
Shown in 582 Sqn O.R.B. as Wireless Operator in the crew of Brian McMillan. Was with McMillan at 7 Sqn before posting to 582 Sqn on that squadron's formation 4/44.

Thank you all for your help, greatly appreciated. I believe that he served with 78 Squadron as a Sgt in 1941 and also as a PO in 1942.

    Thanks
    Daz
