Default Sgt Ed S Moyer 639133, a Canadian in RAF

Long shot but I am trying to see if any records, information data exists on Sgt Edward S Moyer 639133, a Canadian in RAF

    He is mentioned here
    http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/sho...029#post169029

Moyer was an Air Gunner with No.28 Squadron and happened to accompany Flt Lt Niranjan Prasad on a dusk sortie. They had to bail out in the vicinity of Mingaladon at night after either getting lost, or being shot down by their own AA (depending on the versions ). One of the first bale outs out of a Lysander in Burma.

Moyers name is mentioned a couple of times in the ORB of 28 Squadron and one of them shows up the service number above. the service number and first name is confirmed in this document as well. https://www.bombercommandmuseumarchi...diansinraf.pdf

He is not present in AIR78.

    Jagan,

    Re: 639133 Edward S. MOYER.

Here is what Les Allison had to say about Moyer:

MOYER, Edward S., F/O (639133) from Port Hammond, B.C., joined in March /39. He served as an Air Gunner with Nos. 28, 31 and 34 Sqdns in India and was comm. in June /44. Postwar he was a reporter for the Vancouver Province but died in 1966.

    See:
Canadians in the Royal Air Force.
    Allison,Les.
    Roland:Author,1978.
    p.174.

NB. Allison's information is very unreliable.

    From the London Gazette:

    Air Ministry, 19th September, 1944.
    ROYAL AIR FORCE.
    GENERAL DUTIES BRANCH.
    Appointment to commission.
As Plt. Offs. on prob. (emergency): -
    Wt. Offs.

    639133 Sylvester Edgar MOYER (55912) 20th June, 1944

    Jagan and Col,

    To further complicate the matter:

The man Les Allison says died in 1966 was Edward John Moyer, dob 19 May 1912, Shallow Lake, Ontario. Deceased Riverview Hospital, Essondale, BC 28 May 1966. Cause of death pulmonary edema.

Profession given was "carpenter, Mission School Board"

I don't think this is the same man at all. Throughout the 50s, the Vancouver Sun would wish their readers "Merry Christmas" and the entire newspaper staff, helpfully divided into departments, had their names. Edward Moyer worked in the editorial department.

If the editor changed professions and became a carpenter, one would think his obituary would mention his years at the newspaper. It doesn't.

As it all turns out, the man we're looking for was Sylvester Edgar Moyer, born Assiniboia, Saskatchewan 28 December 1918; deceased Vancouver General Hospital 15 December 1964.

Obituary for Sylvester, Vancouver Province 16 December 1964 says of his war record:

A native of Asssiniboia, Sask, he came to BC with his family in 1934. He had a distinguished war record and was decorated while serving with the RAF in India, more than four years during the Second World War. He later transferred from the RAF to the RCAF. He was a flying officer on discharge
AIR78 has him under Sylvester. AIR-78-115-6_1 pg 2/38

    Regards,

    Dave

    Dave and Col,

Many thanks for filling in the gaps.

So my man is Sylvester Edgar Moyer . Many thanks for catching the AIR78 reference too and I am disappointed at myself for not spotting that. There are only about a page or two worth of Moyers in the AIr78 record.. and this one should have been an easy spot!

So he made an officer but tragic he died young.
