Hi Hugh, the only useful explanation which I was able to find is in the TNA Discovery as Air Raid Reporting Liaison Section (ARRLS)

On 1 January 1941, 72818 F/O Henry Roger de Wilde was awarded the Military Cross. Originally recommended for the DSO. He had served with No,2 ARRLS, No,14 Group. Pray tell, what was the ARRLS ?

There is a Henri/Henry Roger De Wilde in Airhistory as RNAS (Flight Sub Lt) in WW1.
Later in dec 1918 he is shown as RAF (Capt) and with the DFC.
So looks like he was probably in France as a 'Retread' ( A &SD Branch) with the RAF contingent of the BEF and (presumably) got involved in some ground action during the retreat or Dunkirk.

I think this is probably the same officer - excerpt from the DFC citations for 2 Nov 1918
Supplement to the London Gazette, 2 November 1918 (30989/12964)
Lt. (T./Capt.) Henry Roger de Wilde.
This officer has proved himself a bold and
skilful airman. On a recent date, having
bombed an enemy dump, he dived on troops
who were detraining near; the enemy
scattered and fled, so vigorous was his
attack. Later on the same day he engaged
several large parties of infantry in the
streets of a town, inflicting casualties and
causing confusion.
