As a start point, the photo A Flight, No. 1 Squadron, 21 I.T.W., July, 1943 would have been taken during his basic training in Torquay (where No 21 Initial Training Wing was located at the time), prior to him being posted (probably to RAF St Athan) to start his training in his recommended air crew trade, which in this case was as a Flight Engineer..
