Frederick George Knight - SAAF or RAFVR?

Frederick George Knight was the pilot of an 11 Sqn Blenheim which was shot down by Zeros off Trincomalee on 9 April 1942. Most sources, including the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, say he was a Lt in the SAAF, but the London Gazette says at https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...5358/page/6780 that he was a RAFVR Sgt commissioned as a RAFVR Plt Offr on 29 July 1941. His service number changed to 102349 from 108518 at that time. 102349 is the service number given by the CWGC.

I am inclined to believe that Knight was a SAAF Lt, but in that case why was he not identified as such in the London Gazette entry?

According to a family tree on ancestry.com he was born at Burgerstorp in South Africa in 1912.

The Graves Registration Form on his CWGC entry has S.A.A.F. and on the Panel List he's listed under 'South African Air Force.'
