Default AIR78 removed from National Archives

    Hello,

I've tried to get some info in AIR 78/47 file in the NAA, but I received the answer that the file has not been digitised. Strange as before the files were available on the site? It is the same thing for all the other AIR78 files.

Is there something I should know about a new policy from the NAA?

    Thanks

    Phil

I've got a full set of their Air 78 files, which were available to download free of charge before they offered free downloads to registered users a couple of years ago.

Maybe they've been doing some housekeeping and tidying the files up?

As an aside, do the actual cards still exist?

    Hi Mojmir,
I did too many downloads regarding those files until stopping when they could be read directly on their site...but I have not AIR78/47!
As for my guy, I have a F/Sgt Mark A. DOWNEY with a possible service number 1521030. I'd like to confirm that. He was involved in the crash of Spitfire NH470 (08.08.44 - 602 Sqn) and was badly injured.
    Thanks for checking

None now seem to be readily available from the forums Air 78 database. Air 81 as well:( How can the NA be so unhelpful ?

Till NA figures out their AIR78 strategy - a reminder that forces war record has the AIR78 search available .. it is a bit iffy but works well 8 out of 10 times.

PS: This is the only section of FWR that I can actually recommend... and which is free.. anything else.. just stay away!

    Simon,

Curious - what is the file file / disk size of the full set? You know where I am going with this :) .. hit me up if it needs to be online now!

    Jagan,

The full AIR 78 set occupies 105 GB on my hard drive. It took me three years to download it all ! The vast majority before I acquired WiFi !

    Hello

For those interested, I received the following message from the NA regarding AIR78 files:

Thank you for contacting The National Archives

Following a query about the online availability of AIR 78 , the digital images have been temporarily removed in accordance with the National Archives Takedown policy for consideration by the Takedown panel. The microform images currently remain available at the National Archives.

I will update you once a decision has been made.

    That can take years!!!

    Phil
