    Default Spitfire K9968

    There is some discrepancy in the records re K9968.

    The K File has

    602S 8/5/39, stalled on landing, C Fenton 5/6/39; ROS, CFL nr Cherbourg 31/11/39 (sic); dismantled and parts to Locking for GI.

    The History says

    602S 12/5/39, 66S cd Duxford 6/9/39 pilot killed soc.


    Does anyone have the true picture please?

    P/O D G B Paton of 66 Squadron was killed on this date. Unless someone can attribute a different aircraft to him, it seems likely that he was in K9968.

    Hi,
    Just to add that "Spitfire the History" has -
    K9968 - 182 - FF 9.5.39; 602 Sqn 12.5; 66 Sqn c/d Dxfd 6.9 pilot killed; SOC rtp( reduced to produce).
    I have also found a note that 31.11.39 - 602 - K9968 - F/L France pilot killed - Parts for GI.

    BUT

    Just to confuse things

    There is alsothe entery for
    K9986 which reads -

    K9986 - 200 - MIII - FF GP 20.5.39; 66 Sqn 22.5 ;c/d at night Dxfd 6.9; SOC 18.9.

    Beggers the question of a second pilot ?

    Somewhere on this site I did ask about early Spitfire and Hurricane losses - I do not know off hand if this A/c was one that had answers ? but cannot find the thread in archive now.

    I would love to know how a Sqn based in Scotland at the time (602) could hev lost an aircraft in France

    Gents

    thank you for your input. There was another casualty on this day , ML Hulton-Harrap 40116, of 56S. He was killed in the 'Battle of Barking Creek'.

    On the face of it it looks as though there has been confusion between K9968 and K9986 which I will point out to Jim Halley.

    I don't understand the Cherbourg thing either, there were no operations by FC on this day except 'The Battle of Barking Creek', according to Foreman.

    I think it is worse than that - 3 aircraft histories have become mixed up

    K9868 - Del To 74 Sqn 18.2.39, Forcelanded in bad weather and overturned Cherboug 21.11.39. To 21 AD 30.11.39, SOC 9.2.40

    K9968 - Del 602 Sqn 8.5.39; Stalled on landing, Church Fenton, 5/6/39; ROS ;Crashed
    in forced landing neat Cherbourg 31.11.39; dismantled and parts Of Locking for GI

    K9986 - Del 66 Sqn, 23.5.39. Crashed at night Duxford 6-9-39 - P/O D G B Paton of 66 Squadron Killed

    I think the 'French' incidents to K9968 and K9868 have become mixed up - The dates are only 10 days apart and the location the same!

    The only RAF Casualty on 21.11.39 (assuming Pilot killed) was HENRY NOEL MASTERTON - has anyone any information on his death - He was KOAS

    That still does not explain what happened to K9968

    Hi Paul,

    For the 21st Nov 39 There is Spitfire K9868 with 74 Sqdn as you have noted above.
    I have found no other Spitfire or Hurricane loss for this date.

    Hi again Paul,

    CWGC has Pilot Officer Henry Noel MASTERSON not Masterton.
    From Ireland.

    Which Squadron was Henry with I wonder ?

    Masterson was killed at Chalford, Glos. in Harvard P5871 of 12 Group Pool.

    From Tigers the story of 74S


    "On the following day (21/11/39) three Spitfires were on patrol near Cherbourg, but eventually had to force land in France, short of fuel, having been vectored on to 54S a/c and straying outof RT range. Unfortunately Thom wrote his a/c off. Treacy and Bushell refuelled and took off successfullythe following day for the return to Hornchurch. Thom took a slower route home by rail and sea."

    Thom is identified earlier in the book as being Don Thom, a Canadian, and his a/c, listed in the appendix, as P9868.

    Don Thom's name does not appear in MenoBoB, nor is it on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.

    I think it safe to assume that the 'Cherbourg' incident involved P9868.
