    Default RAF Fairford

    Hi,

Not a 100% aviation topic, but can anyone please tell me what was the nearest train station to RAF Fairford in WW2 ?

    TIA

This site is very useful for comparing modern maps and geography with older period ones:

    https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side...ight=ESRIWorld

From that I'd say Fairford Station, at the end of the L.W.R. line?

And there’s a Railway Inn at GE 51.708262 -1.774268. "The pub first opened over 250 years ago and has been serving the community since". Say no more!!!
And "During the Second World War, Fairford station was busy with traffic for RAF Fairford and a second goods siding was added to the station in 1944.[23][21][24] The station was closed along with the East Gloucestershire Railway on 18 June 1962". (Wiki)

To save repeating too much which is online try https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2323816 which provides quite a lot of information via the various links offered. The station opened circa 1863 and closed in 1962. The old railway line may be traced on the Streetmap image at http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map?x=415...oucestershire+[City/Town/Village]&searchp=ids&mapp=map by pulling the image slightly to the left. The station was just northeast of the A417, about 1 km east of the town centre. There are images of the station at https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5315846 and https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2035726. I estimate the station to have been about 1.5 to 2 km from the airfield by road on the south side of the A417.

It's location is visible from a bridge crossing the old track, although this photo https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2202423 was taken about 53 years ago.
