Default ES on Fin of RAF 50's Hawker Hunter

Quick question. I have a photo of a Hawker Hunter of 66 Sqn taken in September 1958 at RAF Acklington. In the background is another Hunter which appears to carry no squadron markings and on the fin are the letters ES, with the S slight below and to the right of the E. The photo is black and white but the lettering appears to be a colour other than white, I would guess maybe yellow.

Does anyone have any idea what the E & S designates?

    Many thanks,

    Jim

    Hi Jim

229 OCU had ES as a tail code in 1958, so maybe one of theirs?

Yep, ES was used as a code by one of the flights of 229 OCU at RAF Chivenor during the 1950s. The other flight used RS.
