Default 228 Sqdn log entry query: 17/08/1942

    Hi All,

I am interested in looking further into a log book entry for 228 Squadron, RAF Oban, Scotland. The entry is dated August 17th 1942 and the first pilot is F/O Fife flying Sunderland W4032. The duty is 'escort to secret force. 1GR, 2DRs'

I wondered if this duty would have had anything to do with the ill-fated flight on 25th August where the Duke of Kent was killed in Sunderland W4026?

Can anyone confirm the reason for this particular flight perhaps with the ORB.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Russ

    Hi Russ,

The flight was to escort a Warship group.

'escort to secret force. 1GR, 2DRs'

All naval groups containing warships were known as Force for the duration of their detachment, eg Force H, Force X or in this case Secret Force.

    2DR - 2 Destroyers

As for 1GR I think that this should read 1CR which is 1 Cruiser.

So the group comprised of 1 Cruiser with 2 Destroyer escorts.

    Regards
    Ross
