    Default Square Mesh Track

    Hello,

I'm doing some research on SMT (Square Mesh Track) or BRC mesh, that people here in Normandy call "american mesh" (!). In Normandy we have hundreds of kilometer of fences, that's my topic.

What were the airfields in UK with SMT?

Not Sommerfeld mesh, but SMT. I saw pictures of RAF Christchurch, and heard about other Advanced Landing Grounds, but did someone have a list? pictures? references?
Someone wrote in a book that SMT was removed, re-rolled, and moved to Normandy. Is it credible?

    Thanks.
    Jean-Michel.

    Hello Jean-Michel

Welcome to the Forum, and what an interesting question.

Have you seen the images on the Imperial War Museum website?

    https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/i...ject/205211646

There are also a wartime newsreel-style film which features the use and manufacture of SMT:

https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/i...ect/1060006069 - 3 mins 27 seconds onwards. It includes film of the SMT being made, and mentions that SMT is used "not only in this country, but abroad."

thanks, I knew the pictures, but not the film, it's fantastic !

So, there were SMT in Mediterranean Theater of Op. and in New Guinea. Nice.

I make a database of evidences of SMT in Normandy. I have already more than 4500 spots. Almost every farm has pieces of SMT, and even in urban zone, in Caen center, Bayeux and at more than 50 km of the closest airfield.
I will make a paper in few weeks for an online academic atlas of Caen.
