T/o West Raynham for a NAVEX. Encountered haze: became lost and crash-landed 3 miles SW of Lichfield. Newman's intake of potential officer pilots numbered 183, their appointment being published in the London Gazette on 14 December 1938. Equally impressive was the list of 134 officers from the Commonwealth and Dominions awarded the DFC on 15 October 1943 [Newman, then ranked A.S/L], won his for duty with 34 Squadron, then based in India carrying out operations over the near impenetrable jungles of Burma when the Japanese were ensconced. He was made OBE on 11 October 1955.
