    Default Charles PN NEWMAN 41453

    Hello,

I'm trying also to trace CNP Newman's postings before April 1942. After that date, he served with 34 Squadron first on Blenheims, later on Hurricanes. What are the units he served with before April 42?

    Thanks

    Phil

    Hello,

    Monday 20 November 1939
    101 Squadron
    Blenheim IV L4887 SR-

T/o West Raynham for a NAVEX. Encountered haze: became lost and crash-landed 3 miles SW of Lichfield. Newman's intake of potential officer pilots numbered 183, their appointment being published in the London Gazette on 14 December 1938. Equally impressive was the list of 134 officers from the Commonwealth and Dominions awarded the DFC on 15 October 1943 [Newman, then ranked A.S/L], won his for duty with 34 Squadron, then based in India carrying out operations over the near impenetrable jungles of Burma when the Japanese were ensconced. He was made OBE on 11 October 1955.

    P/O C P N Newman - Safe - Traced to 1 January 1959: G/C OBE DFC.
    LAC J Johnson - Safe
    LAC F J Mantle - Safe - See: 15 March 1940 - 57 Squadron.

    See: BCL1(rev.ed.)/Chorley/p.90.

    L4887 was SR-G of 101 Sqn I believe.
