Default Daring young RAF men in flying machines

I am trying to find information on: a) my uncle, Hugh Robertson BLACK. 28033. ->LG and b) my father Donal James Black (RAF service number unknown)

I found some information on the RAF Commands website:
http://www.rafcommands.com/database/...php?uniq=K4669 Air Ministry, 26th April, 1929. ROYAL AIR FORCE. GENERAL DUTIES BRANCH. The undermentioned are granted short service commissions as Pilot Officers on probation with effect from and with seniority of 13th Apr. 1929: Hugh Robertson BLACK. 28033.

I suppose “28033" is his RAF service number but what is “LG”?

Some information appeared in a newspaper article about his death in 1950 after flying home from Saudia Arabia that shows what a character he was:

“Baron" Black was stationed in Aden in the 1930s , and flew a doctor to a palace in Yemen, saving the life of the king's eldest son.For his flying acrobatics he was awarded the title of “Baron”. Then he was made a "Saint", as his plane crashed on a desert runway while taking off. He was put on the "calendar of saints"

During the war he was C.O of two Flying Training Schools in Canada and later he led his own squadron as a bomber pilot over Germany. He was awarded the Air Force Cross.

Any information about Hugh or Donal Black would be greatly appreciated.

Happy 2023, Stuart Black

Apparently, Paul Macmillian replied to this thread but it isn't showing up here. So I cut and pasted his reply below, in an attempt to solicit some more advice ** in an attempt to find more information (see ** below) on my father (Donal James Black 1809430) and his flying brothers (Hugh Robertson Black, 28033), Ian Stuart Black (? service number unknown) and Stuart Robertson Black (? service number unknown).

LG = London Gazette

Search on full name and service numbers for rank procession

** I don't know what information the LG has and I don't know how to find it to search it (other than in wikipedia, where I can search individual months, but how does one search for other names in the entire document - or do you have to search on month at a time?).

Hugh Robertson BLACK was service number 28033

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...5102/page/1452

The undermentioned Flying Officers are transferred to the Reserve. 13th Apr. 1934 Class A. Hugh Robertson BLACK.

Donal James BLACK was 1809430

** the 25 June 1948 LG says he was Appointment to Commission Royal as a As flying officer in air Force Volunteer Reserve on 13 May 1948

** Then the 21 July 1953 LG supplement said he Relinquished his Commission as a Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserveon 13 May 1953

** how do I find out a) when he was called up for duties, b) where he was called up, c) where he trained, d) what type of aircraft he trained on, etc?

** Does this mean that he had been with the 111 (FIGHTER) SQUADRON since 1 April 1930, and flew 3 Flights on Siskins out of HornChurch, Essex?

Jan 1934 Air Force List

** apparently by 13 April 1934 he had acquired a “class A” and was transferred to Reserve Instructor, Perth

LG is London Gazette
You should be able to find Donal James Black's service number in the AIR 78 files http://www.rafcommands.com/air78/ . There are a lot of Blacks listed here, so it may take a while.

Hello Stuart

Welcome to the Forum.

If you Google "Donal James Black" gazette it brings up a page from the London Gazette dated June 28th 1948 with has the Service Number 1809430.

I see there's an article in the Manchetser Evening News from August 9th 1943 with the headline 'The Four Flying Blacks' about Major Stuart Black, from Urmston and a member of the Home Guard, and his four sons Wing Commander Hugh Robertson Black based in Canada, Pilot Officer Ian Black based in Cairo, Flight Lieut. Stuart Black in India and L.A.C. Donal Black, also in Canada.

The article reports that Major Black was a captain in the Machine Gun Corps in WW1, before which he was an actor, appearing in Hollywood silent movies. The article also relates the story of 'the Baron' Hugh Black.

Thanks Simon, I am learning how to "navigate" this website. Paul McMillan sent me a similar link to the LG for his "appointment", along with another one "relinquishing his commission" on 21 July 1953. But it didn't appear here, so he had to email it to me.

** Thanks for this googling tip (add 'gazette' to the name). Any idea how to find the date when he "enlisted"?

** this is amazing! I tried googling the newspaper article but failed. Can you send me a copy of the article or a link? I think the "Baron" and subsequent "Saint" stories elevated Hugh to legendary status at family gatherings.

Thanks Paul. It took some googling but I eventually found a copy of the "Four Flying Blacks" article. My cousin, Ian Stuart Black's daughter, was filled with pride after reading it.

I am piecing together Donal's training journey from his log book, which seems to start in October 1942 (I see you have a date starting in "1941" - not sure where you found that)
Here are the brief notes I have made so far:
1) Cambridge UAS: October 1942 to March 1943;
2) ACRC London: April 1943;
3) No. 9 ITW Stratford on Avon: April to May 1943;
