COPPINS, Albert Edward - Lac - 1209016 - his headstone records that he died on February 4th 1942, aged 21, not aged 63.

    https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/...edward-coppins

The opening of the inquest into his death was reported in the Croydon Times of February 14th 1942, and it records that he "died at Purley and District Memorial Hospital following injuries he sustained in an accident while riding a motor-cycle in Pampisford-road, Croydon, on Wednesday, February 4th."

He collided with the back of an Army lorry at around 8.20 a.m. and was removed to the hospital where he died while being treated for his injuries. His mother made a complaint that she was not informed of her son's accident until after his death, and she lived just 5 minutes from the hospital. The issue it seems was that a new system was in place whereby the ambulances were controlled by the A.R.P., and that the police were no longer informed when an ambulance was called for.

The inquest returned an open verdict, reported in the same newspaper on February 28th 1942. The driver of the lorry had stopped after doing a brake test, and Coppins, for an unknown reason, crashed into the lorry some 8 to 10 seconds later, according to an eye-witness.

As far as I can see, 505 was still on charge during the census of 10.45. According to the excellent Tiger Moth production list (Malcolm Fillmore, Air-Britain):

82387 (Gipsy Major #82126) Toc as N9306 at 5 MU Kemble 7.10.39. To 36 MU Sealand 2.1.40 and shipped to South Africa 19.1.40. Toc by SAAF as 505. Still on charge at census 10.45. Regd ZS-CID 1.58 to SALM Aero Club, Swartkop. Regd 8.58 to Defence Flying Club, Swartkop. Regn cld. Regd 13.4.71. Regd to Cyril Strecker. Regd (75) to CHJ Van Aswegen, Plettenbergbaai. Regd 20.12.89 to HJ Bessinger, Alrode. Regd (02) to Stuart D Davidson, Port Elizabeth. Regd ZU-FRK 19.12.11 to same owner (based Seaview airfield, Port Elizabeth). Current [17].

I suppose it could have been repaired after a double-fatal crash, but I think it might be more likely that we are looking for another serial for the aircraft involved in this incident.

The aircraft involved in this incident was Wellington R1298 of 18 OTU. 6 Poles were also killed. I have amended the database to reflect this.
Not a good day for Wellingtons...
