Default Walrus of New Zealand Navy

    Hello,

Living now in Moorea in French Polynesia, I found a picture of a Walrus in Opunohu bay taken in 1939 .It is said that this aircraft was embarked on HMNZS Leander of RNZN .
Is there someone able to discover the serial of the Walrus and what about the Leander ?
Thank you for your help .
    Alain.

    Hi Alain
Look at http://www.naval-history.net/xGM-Chrono-06CL-Leander.htm which will give some details of the Leander's career. Unfortunately the photo doesn't show any a/c which would have been stowed amidships near the crane.

    Alain,

In 1939 it was HMS Leander. There was no RNZN/HMNZS until October 1941. Up until that time there was only a New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy.

According to 'The Supermarine Walrus' by G W R Nicholl, the author was pilot of Walrus L2222 embarked on Leander in late 1938 and operating in the Pacific at that time.
