If you check his CWGC entry and check the cemetery reports he is buried in

    Plot 2. Row C. Joint grave 7.

    Also in this is:
    ALLEN, FREDERICK, F Private 5620355 Devonshire Regiment 10/05/1942 22 Plot 2. Row C. Joint grave 7.

Can't help otherwise. No one else of 203 Squadron can be found for the days preceding his death.

    regards

    Hi Steve
203 Sqn were flying Maryland Light Bombers in the Western Desert at the time of Charles' death. It seems possible that he died whilst in transit to ,or from, the Sqn and was in or near Gib when it happened. Given what Dennis has found he might well have been with the OADU(Overseas Aircraft Delivery Unit) and was found passenger space by them along with Pte Allen, on an a/c being delivered to the Med or the Middle East .

    Hi Steve

I investigated this WOp/AG for our book RAF Bomber Looses in the Middle East and Mediterranean. I checked my copy of the 203 Squadron ORB but could not find Sgt Charles, WOp/AG being on operations with 203 Squadron at any time. I did not submit a request to the AHB because he was an individual death place in a Joint grave with a member of the army. I am almost certain that his death recorded squadron of 203 is incorrect and it should be 233, a Hudson Squadron also on Gib at the time he was there (1st December 1941 to July 1942) and it is also possible that he died of an illness.

    Hello Steve,

This is an type error! I have him with 233 Sqn. This Coastal Command unit had a detachment in Gibraltar from 1 August 1941, where they flew out with Lockheed Hudson's.

So, the research must start with 233 Sqn.

    Hi Pel,

I was thinking along the same lines.

I had him as the possible 4th crewman of AM575 No.233 Sqn out of Gib, 15:20 hrs.

At 21:20 hrs a message was heard asking for searchlights then no more was transmitted. The Hudson ditched off Tarifa, Morocco. All rest in North Front Cemetery, Gibraltar.

It is probably the order they were interred in that part of the cemetery, note the grave order and the dates.

    ROUTLEDGE, ERIC CHARLES, E C Gunner 1129826 Royal Artillery 03/05/1942 34 Plot 2. Row C. Joint grave 5.
    Sgt T M Brent Plot 2. Row C. Joint grave 5 05/05/1942
    Sgt A R Vernon Plot 2. Row C. Joint grave 6. 05/05/1942
    F/Sgt R J George Plot 2. Row C. Joint grave 6 05/05/1942
    Sgt T W Charles ? Plot 2. Row C. Joint grave 7. 05/05/1942
    ALLEN, FREDERICK, F Private 5620355 Devonshire Regiment 10/05/1942 22 Plot 2. Row C. Joint grave 7.

    Hello everyone,

Again I must thank you all for supplying relevant information to my thread. Also making me aware of the typing error in the squadron number and that Sgt Charles may have been in a totally different aircraft altogether.

    Appreciated and warmly welcomed.

    Cheers.

    Steve.
