Default Search and Rescue - Italy late 1944

I'm wondering if a Search and Rescue organisation had been established for Allied aircraft operations flying northwards from central Italy by the autumn of 1944. The sort of scenario I have in mind is a supply dropping task for partisans in enemy territory, but with part of the flight being conducted over Allied territory/water.

Would there be a listening watch so that a crew transmitting a distress call could have some hope of being recovered in the event of a ditching or forced landing?

    Hi Brian
There is a book by Norman Franks "Beyond Courage" (Grub Street) that covers Walrus ASR in the Adriatic, Med and Tyrrhenian seas between 1942-1945. It concentrates on the Rescues themselves and may not be so explicit on the Organisation.
