    Default removal of machine guns

    Hi,

I have seen a photo of Flt Lt Joe Fraser, 112 Sqn standing next to his Gladiator at Yannina, Greece in March 1941. The fuselage machine guns have been removed.

Now I know they may have been removed for servicing but has anyone heard if guns were removed to lighten the aircraft and make them more maeouverable. If guns were removed I suppose it would have made more sense to remove the wing guns.

    Any thoughts?

    Alex

    Hi Alex
The servicing idea is probably the best bet, but the fuselage guns would have needed an interrupter gear if they fired through the prop. Under the conditions of the Greek Campaign the gear could well have been difficult to replace and if u/s they may have decided to abandon fuselage armament until conditions were more normal. It might be in the Sqn ORB(if available) if it became a matter of policy for the time.
    Regards
    Dick
