Researching one of our village casualties, Srgt. J. A. McAULEY, mid-upper, k.i.a. returning from Dusseldorf raid 1 August, 1942, 76 Sqdn., Halifax BB195, MP-B, which was abandoned by surviving crew and crashed east of Ingatestone between Brentwood and Chelmsford, Essex, 03.25am.
Could someone oblige me with the likely RAF station that would have sent out a recovery crew and where his death was likely to have been recorded?
Thanks
Stewart

Hi Stewart
McAuley's death is registered at Chelmsford in the 3rd Qtr of 1942.There are 2 airfields that spring to mind first ,Stansted and ,slightly closer, Southend but the crash location is also close to the outskirts of London and recovery could have been organised from the Capital. The responsibility for registration of the death could well have stayed with the local authorities nearest to the site or,if McAuley was still alive when reached, with the hospital where he was taken. It could even have been done by a Mortuary if his body was taken there but the requirement was to register within 5 days in the registration area in which the death occurred.
Regards
Dick
Many thanks gents, I shall take on your suggestions.
