    Default 1584611 Sgt E.H OLIVER Died 26/1/44 1652 HCU ?

    Hi,

Looking for help regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of 1584611 Sgt Edward Henry OLIVER 26/1/1944 listed on the Runnymede Memorial . The RAF Overseas War Deaths 1939-1948 lists his unit as 1652 HCU. I can't find any information on him in any of Chorleys books !

Also listed on the Runnymede Memorial for the 26/1/1944 is 1294557 F/Sgt Matthew John FLETCHER unit ?

    TIA

On an old rafcommands thread (12-Oct-03), Henk asked:

"Crashed in sea S of Bournemouth pier after t/o from Hurn on a ferry flight to the Middle East. Four RAAF-airmen (BOWERING - GRAHAM - RICH - WOOD) recovered and burued Brookwood Mil. Cem. Is it a possibility that:
    F/Sgt Matthew John FLETCHER - 1294557 - Runnymede Panel 217
Sgt Edward Henry OLIVER - 1584611 - Runnymede Panel 235
    were part of this crew?"

No response was forthcoming but Henk may have found out more since then

    Hi Gents,

BB377, 301 FTU crash location is

From RNLI Records of Service 1939-46

    JANUARY 26TH. - SWANAGE, DORSET.
At 2.5 in the morning, information was received from the Bournemouth police, through the coastguard, that an aeroplane had crashed three miles west of Hengistbury Head. A light north-west wind was blowing, with a slight sea. The motorlife-boat Thomas Markby was launched at 2.45 with the honorary secretary, Mr. W. Powell, as one of the crew. R.A.F. launches also went out.

A searchlight on Hengistbury Head, as well as the life-boat’s, was used, but all that was
found was a flying suit, a blanket and wreckage. The life-boat continued to search until six o’clock, and returned to her station at 7.10. - Rewards, £18 14s.

    Regards
    Ross

    Default 1584611 Sgt E.H OLIVER Died 26/1/44 1652 HCU ?

    Hi Crew,

Having checked my files on the loss of Halifax BB377, I find I have one additional RAAF crew member, namely; AUS37524 F/Sgt Albert Russell DAVIS RAAF.

DAVIS' A705, which is, as yet, undigitised, is incorrectly filed under Service number 37254, making it difficult to locate with just a simple Service number search.

My crew make-up (In no particular order), looks something like this :-

    AUS417451 F/Sgt Frank Edgar BOWERING RAAF +
    AUS37524 F/Sgt Albert Russell DAVIS RAAF +
AUS415578 F/Sgt Kevin Malcolm Ford GRAHAM RAAF +
    AUS427148 F/Sgt Warwick William RICH RAAF +
    AUS20772 F/Sgt Geoffrey Markwell WOOD RAAF +
1584611 Sgt Edward Henry OLIVER +

I cannot confirm the presence of, 1294557 F/Sgt Matthew John FLETCHER, aboard BB377.

The data on the RAAF members at the AWM is a real mess. Their units being variously described as - 301 Ferry Trg RAF, 1652 Communications Unit and 30 A.D.U !

    The Halifax File/Roberts p.40, plonks for - 1 OAFU/301 FTU/3 OADU.

Other Forumites might be able to add to the above.

    Regards,
    Col.

    Hi All,

Spot on Henk ! 1294557 Matthew John FLETCHER confirmed on 104 (T) OTU, Wellington IV Z1490.

AUS418198 Graeme Grieve STOBIE RAAF, also aboard.

Crew (In no particular order), :-

AUS418198 F/O Graeme Grieve STOBIE RAAF (Nav) +
    1294557 F/Sgt Matthew John FLETCHER +
    CAN R/104961 F/Sgt Leif Tapio Erickson (Wop/AG) +

STOBIE's digtised A705 available at NAA.

3-up seems a bit light on for a Wellington !

    Regards,
    Col.

"3-up seems a bit light on for a Wellington!"

But given that this was a 'Transport' OTU, there would have been no need of an air bomber or air gunner - a pilot, nav and a wop would have sufficed.

    G'Day Errol,

    Point taken on crew make-up.

Stobie's body was recovered and laid to rest in Oban (Pennyfuir) Cemetery, Sec.I.Grave 15, on 15/2/1944.

The body of Erickson RCAF, was found washed up on the shore of Tiree on 27/1/1944. He was buried in Soroby Burial Ground, Tiree (no Grave/Memorial ref).

Fletcher remains missing and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, panel 217.

    Thanks,
    Col.
