    Default PRU Aircrew

    Hi everyone,

Were the aircrew of the PRU specialist pilots or were they pilots who transferred from other squadrons to take on this somewhat dangerous role, by that I mean being unarmed during their flights into enemy territory.

I know that every mission flown by airmen at this time was a dangerous one but knowingly take off unarmed must have made it even more nerve-racking than usual.

    Regards.

    Steve.

    Steve,

No.8 OTU was formed 18 May 42 to train these pilots.

According to Air-Britain's 'RAF Flying Training and Support Units since 1912', it was formed 'from the Operational Training Flight of No.1 PRU and the PRU Conversion Flight of No.3 School of General Reconnaissance [and on] 1.8.42 absorbed 'K' Flight of No.1 PRU, Detling.'

My uncle Fred was killed in a flying accident on 9 Sep 42 whilst flying with 8OTU. He had been posted there only a few weeks earlier from No.17 (P)AFU at Watton, and was not aware of his being selected for PRU training until the posting to the OTU was announced during his last few days at Watton.

    Hi Steve,

In the early days of the PDU/PRU pilots were experienced aircrew who were posted from other units. Whilst being experienced pilots the whole science of photo recce was being rediscovered and they had to learn as they went along.

As Errol says later on aircrew were posted to 1 PRU straight from training

Incidently has anyone had a look at the 8(C) OTU ORB. Is it very detailed as I know that the info in OTU ORBs can vary from very good to almost non existant.

    Best Regards

    Hi Andy and Errol,

Thanks for the replies very informative indeed. Even though they were trained to fly with these units again may I say it must have been very intimidating knowing that you can be chased across the sky with no defence at all to return with photograph to help the war effort.

    Cheers.

    Steve.
