    Default 263 Squadron Bardufoss, Norway

    263 Squadron 27 May 1940

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This unit was based out of Bardufoss and flying Gloster Gladiators in the latter part of the Norway campaign.

Can anyone please tell me exactly what they were doing on 27 May 1940 ? And what and who the losses were?

    Any help appreciated.

    Regards
    Peter.

    Hi Peter
From "Fledgling Eagles" by Christopher Shores et al, it seems that 263 were operating out of both Bodo and Bardufoss on this day. Radio Masts near Bodo were attacked at 0800 by Ju 87's and Tony Lydekker was able to get airborne, but because the attack was only 800 yds from the airfield Hull(no rank given) had to wait and then he t/o and shot down a Ju 87 into the sea. He was attacked in turn by the Bf 110 escort and crashed at Bodosjoen. Lydekker was also attacked and wounded by others of the escort and had to land at Bardufoss where the a/c was written off. A Sgt Milligan of 263 t/o from Bardufoss at 0900 and ,on patrol, attacked 2 He 111's. He was attacked by a 3rd and sent down into a valley in low cloud trailing smoke. The only confirmed German loss was a Ju87 at Bodo, and we lost Lydekker's Gladiator and presumably Hull's. There are no a/c serials or complete identification of the pilots given.
    Regards
    Dick

    Hi everyone,

I was wondering if LAC Rhys Penry Jones (545400), was a Welshman? I realise that not all persons surnamed Jones are Welsh but Rhys Penry has a Welsh ring to it. I checked the CWGC website but not next of kin was mentioned.

So, if some kind soul could help then I would be gratefully appreciative, which would mean another name to my ever growing Welsh airmen database.

    Cheers.

    Steve.
