    Default 83 Squadron Hampden

I am researching Hampden bomber of 83 squadron (OL-Z AE191) which was returning from Aachen when he was hit by the Veere anti aircraft battery on the island of Walcheren at 06.44am (local time) on 8/12/41

Does anyone know of a photograph of AE191?

The crew of four all safely ditched and were in their dinghy but Bernard Basevi died on 10th December and Derek Jacobs died on 11th December, both from exposure. They were both buried at sea.

Is anyone in contact with the family of Derek Jacobs? (He had a brother and a sister)

Tony Parsons and George Wiscombe were picked up by German escort vessel V1305 from 13 Vorpostenflottille on 12th December 1941 at 16.00hrs 15miles South West of Heligoland. They were then taken to Cuxhaven on the 13th December where they were interviewed by the Gestapo and spent a night in hospital before being taken to Marlag & Milag Nord (Stalag XB) POW camp the following day, 14th December 1942

Does anyone know any futher info on V1305? Her name? Captain? Photo?

I had previously been told that the survivors were reported POW on a “German Radio Broadcast” but recent research has shown the Royal Air Force recorded that at 18.30 hrs on 14th January 1942 “Friesland Radio” reported their capture.

Is there any chance that this radio station still exists?

Imperial War Museum and the RAF Museum Hendon and the BT Archive have no record of this radio broadcast.I have also e-mailed various radio stations in the Friesland area, but again with no success.

    Yours hopefully
    James

    Hi Dave
Thank you for finding that one. It was written by me to "Mac" who runs a great site on all things seafaring. Last year I managed to track down the third RAF chap in the photo and had a very nice letter from him. I've been chasing this one for about 20 years but it was only this week that the AHB told me that it was V1305 that picked them up having been in contact numerous times.
Thank you again for looking. One never knows unless one asks.
    Best wishes
    James
